Assessing Meaningful Learning

I remember using the kidspiration site when I was younger. I plan on teaching high school, so I imagine that if I use either of those sites, it will be inspiration. The rubric gallery was so incredibly helpful and it was very user friendly! I can definitely see myself going back to it when I become a teacher. I love how many sites are out there that were made specifically for academia!

This has been a fun class! I am so glad I decided to stick with it. I was very close to just taking this class during the normal school year, but this has been so great! To be honest, I already used a lot of the applications and sites we worked with, but it was interesting to see the educational benefits of the sites. I'm so excited to be a teacher. This is only the second education class I've taken and I've just reinforced how incredibly excited I am. I love technology and learning about how to incorporate it into my career has be wonderful. I am also excited to have been able to create my first lesson plan!

Technology Application Standards

§110.31. English Language Arts and Reading, English I (One Credit), Beginning with School Year 2009-2010.
(a)  Introduction.
(1)  The English Language Arts and Reading Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) are organized into the following strands: Reading, where students read and understand a wide variety of literary and informational texts; Writing, where students compose a variety of written texts with a clear controlling idea, coherent organization, and sufficient detail; Research, where students are expected to know how to locate a range of relevant sources and evaluate, synthesize, and present ideas and information; Listening and Speaking, where students listen and respond to the ideas of others while contributing their own ideas in conversations and in groups; and Oral and Written Conventions, where students learn how to use the oral and written conventions of the English language in speaking and writing. The standards are cumulative--students will continue to address earlier standards as needed while they attend to standards for their grade. In English I, students will engage in activities that build on their prior knowledge and skills in order to strengthen their reading, writing, and oral language skills. Students should read and write on a daily basis.
(2)  For students whose first language is not English, the students' native language serves as a foundation for English language acquisition.
(A)  English language learners (ELLs) are acquiring English, learning content in English, and learning to read simultaneously. For this reason, it is imperative that reading instruction should be comprehensive and that students receive instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, and word attack skills while simultaneously being taught academic vocabulary and comprehension skills and strategies. Reading instruction that enhances ELL's ability to decode unfamiliar words and to make sense of those words in context will expedite their ability to make sense of what they read and learn from reading. Additionally, developing fluency, spelling, and grammatical conventions of academic language must be done in meaningful contexts and not in isolation.
(B)  For ELLs, comprehension of texts requires additional scaffolds to support comprehensible input. ELL students should use the knowledge of their first language (e.g., cognates) to further vocabulary development. Vocabulary needs to be taught in the context of connected discourse so that language is meaningful. ELLs must learn how rhetorical devices in English differ from those in their native language. At the same time English learners are learning in English, the focus is on academic English, concepts, and the language structures specific to the content.
(C)  During initial stages of English development, ELLs are expected to meet standards in a second language that many monolingual English speakers find difficult to meet in their native language. However, English language learners' abilities to meet these standards will be influenced by their proficiency in English. While English language learners can analyze, synthesize, and evaluate, their level of English proficiency may impede their ability to demonstrate this knowledge during the initial stages of English language acquisition. It is also critical to understand that ELLs with no previous or with interrupted schooling will require explicit and strategic support as they acquire English and learn to learn in English simultaneously.
(3)  To meet Public Education Goal 1 of the Texas Education Code, §4.002, which states, "The students in the public education system will demonstrate exemplary performance in the reading and writing of the English language," students will accomplish the essential knowledge, skills, and student expectations in English I as described in subsection (b) of this section.
(4)  To meet Texas Education Code, §28.002(h), which states, "... each school district shall foster the continuation of the tradition of teaching United States and Texas history and the free enterprise system in regular subject matter and in reading courses and in the adoption of textbooks," students will be provided oral and written narratives as well as other informational texts that can help them to become thoughtful, active citizens who appreciate the basic democratic values of our state and nation.

I want to try and have bell ringers/warm-ups for every class in order to try and keep my students' minds active the second they get in my classroom. I haven't thought about what novels I would assign to my students, but I plan to have a variety of genres so they can  experience a little bit of everything. Hopefully, they haven't been exposed to everything yet so I can have them research and learn new things while they are reading novels. I plan on having essay writings, as well as group projects so they can learn to improve their interpersonal skills.

I think the most important skills for my students to advance on are research and listening and speaking. Reading and writing is definitely important, but I rather hope that my students have at least a basic understanding of those by they time they come to my class considering it is a high school course. Research is important because it allows the student to recognize what is relevant and reliable information. Listening and speaking allows the students to hone in on their interpersonal skills. Listening is a skill many people still have trouble accomplishing and I want my students to understand its importance. You can tell how much confidence someone has when they speak. I want to teach my students to speak intellectually with their head held high.

Visualizing with Technology

I love for schools to embrace the advancements of technology. By the time I left high school, every classroom had a smart board. Teachers were beginning to rely on Facebook pages and podcasts more and more. I think it's truly amazing! I grew up with computers, so it's logical that using them in the classroom would be helpful for me. My future students will have relied on technology even more so than I did (if that's even possible), so keeping their attention by integrating what keeps them entertained is the best way to go. I am very ready to work with technology in my classroom.

Learning with technology is honestly the easiest way for me to learn. My experience with online classes this summer has truly been an eye opener. I have used some online classroom tools before, such as MyMathLab, but this was my first time being completely online. Videos, podcasts, presentations are just easier to learn from. Waiting for other student's questions to be answered can get tiresome. Visualizing technology in the classroom has made my learning experience absolutely amazing.

Emerging Technologies

This project actually took more time than I thought it would. I figured that since we had already learned about Web 2.0 tools there wasn't really much else we could do with them. I have to say, I was not aware of all the websites that fall into the Web 2.0 tools category. It's amazing how many of those tools I already use! There were some sites on the list that I had a hard time imagining in an educational context; for instance, Tumblr and Pinterest. I will definitely have to spend some time exploring the possibilities with those a bit more.

Podcasts!

I have heard of podcasting before. There is actually a weekly podcast that I follow. I find it convenient because I can listen to it while I am driving if I decide that I don't want to listen to music. It's nice because I can just listen to it from my phone or iPad, given that I have wifi. I first experienced educational podcasts last summer term. My professor used podcasts to give lectures, and read through PowerPoints she had uploaded. It kind of brought you closer to the professor since you were able to hear her voice.

I had actually considered using podcasts as a teaching tool before. I really have been thinking about having a blog (or wiki page!) made for my future class and podcasts would be easy to link or embed on to a page like that. I don't think I would allow students to listen to said podcasts in class, though. Integrating technology has its disadvantages because you never REALLY know what the student is using their electronic device for. Though it would be good to acclimate them to the podcasts during class, the possibilities of them just listening to music seem to high. I would have to figure out a way around that (with any technology, really).

Technology has negative, obviously, but I firmly believe that the advantages highly outweigh the negative. The internet has brought us all closer together. I am a tech abuser. I sheepishly admit to being the girl with her phone in her hand at dinner. But I also admit to finding good uses for it as well. I have found long lost friends and cousins through Facebook or extensive google searches. I've learned how to say phrases in different languages through google translate. I have found new cuisines and crafts on Pinterest. There are so many amazing things the world wide inter web has to offer that the negatives are almost not even there.

Multiple Intelligences

I was beyond excited to have finally done made my first lesson plan! It was exciting to look through the TEKS and try to figure out an assignment that would make sense for the age group I plan to work with.

I was already familiar with Multiple Intelligences, but it was nice to have a refresher lesson. I'll have to make sure to keep in mind that I need to accommodate every student's different personalities, while still making them well rounded learners. I had heard about Bloom's work before and was left confused by them. I had trouble differentiating them, but I clicked on all the links and I think I understand them a little better now.

Web 2.0

I am a fan of technology. It has helped us come a long way and if something makes your life easier, why not use it? Web 2.0 is just one of the many ways the internet has helped keep us more connected and informed. It's basically a way for the community to put together information, discussions, art, etc. onto one platform. I use Web 2.0 sites all the time (YouTube, for instance), but I didn't know it had a specific name.

Web 2.0 is becoming more and more useful in this day in age, especially in the classroom. Web 2.0 makes it easier to keep students updated and it serves as an efficient communication form. For instance, I know of various professors and high school teachers that use voice thread options as a means of communication, lecturing, and general discussion. And sites like wiki seem like they could be quite useful to me. I want to be an English teacher and wiki seems like it could make literary analysis or discussion easier. I like the Web 2.0 sites and feel like they could make classrooms run smoother.

Netiquette

I actually didn't know a lot of the copyright rules that were explained in the article. I have never really thought about the rules regarding copyright in the past. However, it is refreshing to know that so much is allowed for education purposes. Though, logically, I was aware that copyright had nothing to do with money and was more about ownership, it was nice to be reminded that I can still get in trouble even if I make no profit from the copyrighted material. I'm definitely going to keep a copy of the guidlines and Hall Davidson's article as a reference when I become a teacher.

I didn't really learn anything new about cyber bullying or online predators. I grew up with technology. All the warnings have been jammed into my head a million and three times. The internet is wonderful and I can't imagine school without it (I mean, I'm in an online class and typing out a blog assignment on my iPad right now). Unfortunately, bad things tend to accompany the good. Bullies are everywhere, and for some reason, it doesn't seem to fade out with age. I want my students to feel comfortable around me, and I hope that if they end up being bullied, they are willing to come to me for help. As for online predators, they are disgusting and I really hope that my students never have to deal with that. I will try to keep them informed of the dangers of sharing too much. However, other than restricting certain websites on campus and informing them, I don't know how I can keep them 100% safe from all the creeps on the internet.

Intro!

Hello! My name is Diana! I'm 19 years old and currently working on my Bachelors. I have been a communications, pre-law, and psychology major. I am now an English major with a concentration in teaching 8-12. I'm actually really excited about this new major! I love reading and writing and some of the best volunteering I've done is when I tutored. I am a member of Kappa Delta sorority and I absolutely love it. The values she stands for and the girls I have met have truly made my college experience amazing so far. Hmmm..My favorite color is purple and I like to travel. I've been to most of the major cities in the US, Mexico, and Jamaica. However, my favorite place in the world is the Grand Canyon. I love learning and I can't wait to be able to teach people and hopefully ignite their love for new experiences.

Technology in the classroom is pretty vital. We are in the age of technology; it is, literally, everywhere. Students are always on some sort of mobile device, so it really just makes sense to try to integrate what they already know and enjoy doing with learning. I don't think it would be reasonable to just toss out the "old" ways of the classroom because truly nothing can replace the smell of an actual book, but it wouldn't hurt to make it easier to access the classroom from home.

I hope to learn how to make a classroom environment fun and efficient. I know a lot about technology, but I want to find ways to make that knowledge useful as a teacher. I hope to actually learn new things and find them helpful enough to remember and then apply in my classroom when I become a teacher. I, obviously, would also like to make an A. I took my first full online class last summer session and I really enjoyed it. Hopefully, I have just a good experience as last time!
